COVID-19: UBTH harps on improved hygiene, social distancing in Edo

Benin – The management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin in Edo, has reiterated its calls for an improved practice of hygiene and strict adherence to physical and social distancing to contain spread oCOVID-19.

Prof. Darlington Obaseki, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UBTH, said in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Benin.

Obaseki said the management of the hospital had enlightened its staff and selected members of the public about the hospital’s effort so far in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic through an event tagged: “COVID-19 in UBTH: A UBTH staff Webinar”.

“With the advent of COVID-19, the hospital has no doubt been in the forefront of leading the response in collaboration with the Edo Government.

“This collaboration has yielded many benefits on different fronts, including improvement in the manpower and testing capacity of the state.

“We must always keep social distancing, especially the elderly, 60 years and above, are more susceptible to fatalities.

“There is also a higher rate of infection among males than females. This is avoidable with the use of the face mask,” he said.

Obaseki added that healthcare workers must ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which would help to reduce infections, even in the face of exposures.

He said all hands must still be on deck to ensure that morbidity and mortalities were reduced....
